Past Efforts to Develop Force-Projection Space Weapons Failed because Conventional Weapons Offered Same Capability
Space weapons allow a nation to strike at a wide variety of points around the globe and in space itself. However, many of the past proposals for space weapons faced competition from other weapons that could provide the same capability. An extended range V2 could have completed the same mission as the Sašnger weapon. Likewise, growing ballistic missile, strategic bomber force, and submarine launched ballistic missile capabilities could provide many of the nuclear strike options that Dyna-Soar might have possibly offered. Likewise, unmanned satellites provided a continual presence to survey Soviet activities. The deployment of a constellation of these vehicles was, debatably, better than Dyna-Soar since the launch of a hypersonic glider might signal an unwelcome message, warranted or not, to Moscow.
